Chapman Taylor completes remodelling of Bangkok’s Mandarin Oriental Spa
By Tom Walker 12 Jul 2017
All treatment rooms at the spa have been renovated, including the Royal Suite
Global masterplanning and architects practice Chapman Taylor has completed a four-month redevelopment project of the spa at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Bangkok, Thailand.

Headed by Chapman Taylor’s Bangkok office, the US$750,000 (€657,000, £582,100) redesign included the creation of new treatment rooms and improving the “flow” of the property.

Jon Grant, director of Chapman Taylor Bangkok, said: “We rationalised the overall planning, which was disjointed, renovating the exterior entrance and adding two new facial treatment rooms and renovating the Royal Suite.

“We also redesigned all the existing treatment rooms, added a 270sq ft (25sq m) relaxation area, relocated the back of house areas and renovated the public areas, while also adding feature fabrics and paints with a complete lighting reconfiguration.”

As a result of the work, the spa now covers an area of 4,400sq ft (410sq m). Facilities include a reception/welcoming area, the signature Royal Suite, three water suites, four facial treatment rooms, four standard massage rooms, a Moroccan rasul and a relaxation area.

According to Grant, the redesign pays homage to the Mandarin Oriental’s – and Bangkok’s – rich cultural history.

“The design was influenced by the hotel’s Colonial style, drawing strong references from the region – with some traditional upcountry Thai touches and subtle details being a main influence,” he said.

“Drawing from those strong regional references, the design has a calming atmosphere, with all functions connecting from the central feature staircase with a fine balance of simplicity and colonial detailing."

The spa is famously located across the river from the Mandarin Oriental hotel, so spa guests literally experience a journey as they face a short boat ride to get to it.

The spa’s treatment menu offers a wide range of massages, body scrubs, facials and also has a focus on ayurvedic treatments.
