New report reveals global spa economy worth $250bn |
 |
|
| The global spa economy is worth more than US$250bn (159.1bn euro, £136.2bn), according to a report unveiled at the recent Global Spa Summit in New York City, New York, US.
Prepared by independent research group SRI International, the first ever Global Spa Economy Report was derived from data for the year 2007, collected from 210 countries, 21,000 industry responses to a global survey and interviews with more than 50 high-level executives.
The report’s estimates include US$60.3bn in core spa industry revenues, including those generated by facilities, investments and education, and US$194bn (123.4bn euro, £97.9bn) in spa-related hospitality, tourism and real estate.
When other related industries such as beauty, nutrition and fitness were factored in, last year’s global health and wellness market exceeded US$1trillion (0.63 trillion euro, £0.5trillion).
The report also found that 1.2 million workers were employed in more than 71,600 spas worldwide. During the same period, capital investment in spas approached US$13bn (8.2bn euro, £6.5bn).
In a breakdown of spa revenues by country, the US was top, with earnings of more than US$12bn (7.6bn euro, £6.06bn), followed by Japan at US$5.7bn (3.62bn euro, £2.87bn) and Germany with US$3.8bn (2.41bn euro, £1.91bn).
The report defined spas as establishments that promote wellness through the provision of therapeutic and other professional services aimed at renewing body, mind and spirit. Details: globalspasummit.org
