A new community sports facility is opening at the Mulgrave Community Sports Field in Whitby on Friday 21 September.
The new pitches and pavilion – funded in part by a £271,600 from the Football Foundation – comprise phase one of a larger project aimed at establishing a multi-sport facility for the town’s north and northwest areas.
The final completed facility will link local football and cricket clubs and provide a new crown green bowling club.
Athletics, five-a-side football, rollerblading, volleyball, netball, archery and orienteering activities will also be on offer.
The new facilities will provide women’s and junior sports, as well as a range of community programmes, such as social inclusion and health schemes.
Environmental features will include an 85–90 per cent energy-efficient ground source heat pump to heat water for the showers and under-floor heating system; photovoltaic tiles to gather power from the sun and supply electricity; a rainwater-harvesting system to water the field and supply the showers and the planting of more than 600 new trees on the site.
Irene Raine, communications officer of the Mulgrave Community Sports Association, said: “The next few years should be an exciting time for the area with all the new opportunities that will be on offer for young and old alike.”
