Ancient Greek sculpture inspires new signature treatment at boutique Croatian spa hotel

Boutique Hotel Alhambra and Villa Augusta, located on the Croatian island of Lošinj, has enhanced its spa offering with the launch of a new two-hour treatment, Apoxyomenos Escape.

Drawing inspiration from one of the world’s best-preserved Greek statues, Apoxyomenos, discovered off the coast of Lošinj in 1999, the new treatment harnesses the therapeutic benefits of the island’s abundant herbs and plants and over 200 years’ of healing traditions.

Priced at €200 (£182, US$233), the ritual is designed to restore harmony and balance to body and mind through a salt scrub, relaxing full-body massage and hydrating facial.

Health and fitness were fundamental practices in ancient Greek civilisation and held in high regard. Athletes were often celebrated in Greek culture and the conventional subject of ancient Greek sculptures.

Discovered on the seabed off the shore of the island of Lošinj, the treasured bronze of Apoxyomenos dates from the first century BC and is claimed to be one of the world’s best-preserved ancient Greek statues.

Lošinj’s Apoxyomenos depicts a young male athlete using a curved metal tool – called a strigil – used for body cleansing after competition or exercise. Typically, athletes in ancient Greece would coat their skin in olive oil and dust to protect it from the sun while exercising, and afterwards, they would scrape off the oil, sweat and sand before a post-workout massage and bath.

Hotel Alhambra’s Apoxyomenos Escape draws inspiration from this ancient ritual while harnessing the island’s natural abundance of plant species, including an estimated 1,200 varieties of aromatic and therapeutic herbs.

The two-hour treatment begins with a salt body exfoliation infused with lavender and orange essence to remove dead skin and clean away oil, dirt and residue from pores, to leave skin looking vibrant and youthful.

This is followed by a combined stretching and massage technique using mint aromatherapy essential oils to rejuvenate the skin.

The journey concludes with a soothing and hydrating lavender and immortelle skincare treatment with plant extracts and essential oils, a combination known to support regenerative capabilities helping to renew the skin.

Hotel Alhambra houses the 660 sqm Cube Spa Alhambra, which offers four experience showers and a Rasul chamber – a traditional Arabian thermal mud treatment that combines heat, steam and mud for a relaxing and skin conditioning treatment.

Additional facilities include three treatment rooms, a heated indoor seawater pool, a Finnish sauna, tepidarium loungers, Mediterranean baths, a nail services studio and an ice fountain.

The hotel is a member of the Croatia-based Lošinij Hotels and Villas group, which has also recently opened a wellness resort, click here to find out more.
