The original Corinthia Hotel in Malta – the Corinthia Palace Hotel – has revealed further details of its new Athenaeum Spa which is scheduled to open March 2020, following a €9m (US$10m, £7.5m) year-long site-wide refurbishment.
The interiors of the 2,000sq m Meditteranean-inspired spa have been created by interior designers Goddard Littard and once complete, the spa will include a garden plunge pool, steamroom, pergola adorned with plants and an indoor and outdoor vitality pool, as well as a sauna, experience showers and heated beds.
In keeping with the spa’s Mediterranean-inspiration, Athenaeum Spa is collaborating with Maltese artisan aromatherapist Stephen Cordina to design an exclusive treatment range which harnesses natural ingredients evocative of local healing traditions.
Spa consultant Paula Perkins supported the refurbishment during the detail design stages, preopening and recruitment, and worked alongside spa procurement company Spa Vision to select the development and delivery of products. Selected suppliers include Living Earth Crafts, Gamma & Bross, Gharieni, Esthetica and Perfect Sense Wax Systems.
Susanne Fisch, spa director, commented: “This is an exciting time as we create a spa experience that exceeds the expectations of anything we’ve seen so far in Malta – and perhaps the Mediterranean.
“When our clients trust us with their time, we understand that is a huge gift,” said Fisch, “so to deliver on their trust, we aim to uplift their lives in the period that they are with us – and that is exactly what the new spa will do.
“We’ve invested significant time and effort into crafting all the details to ensure a seamless and effortless journey for our guests, while remaining deeply connected to the authentic feel of the Mediterranean.”
Harley Street aesthetician, Dr Raina Rodrigues, will offer non-invasive facial aesthetic treatments, while ESPA has been selected as product partner.
Originally built in the 19th century as a private villa for the chief justice of Malta, the hotel was used as living quarters by British Forces during the Second World War. In 1959 the building was bought by the late Paul Pisani and converted by his family into the first Corinthia hotel which opened in 1968.
