Sports people included in Queen's Birthday Honours list
By Tom Walker 09 Jun 2019
Sally Munday, who last month was appointed CEO of UK Sport, has been awarded an OBE
A number of sportspeople have been recognised for their work in this year's Queen's Birthday Honours list.

David Gill, former Manchester United chief executive and vice chair of the Football Association (FA), has been given a CBE.

In 2015, Gill was elected as a FIFA vice-president, but he rejected the position in protest at disgraced FIFA president Sepp Blatter, until Blatter announced his resignation.

Another to have received a CBE is Philip Brook, the outgoing chair of the All England Lawn Tennis Club.

A number of sports administrators have been handed OBEs.

These include Cherry Alexander, major events director at British Athletics, who was managing director of London 2017 – the organisations responsible for staging the successful IAAF World Championships. (• To read an interview with Alexander, conducted for the July issue of Sports Management prior to the championships in 2017, click here).

Sally Munday, the chief executive of England and GB Hockey – who last month was appointed CEO of UK Sport – is another given an OBE. During her tenure at GB Hockey, Team GB women secured their first ever Olympic title at the Rio 2016 Games, while the men’s team finished fourth at London 2012, their best Olympic Games finish in a quarter of a century.

Nigel Walker, national director of the English Insitute of Sport has also received an OBE for his work on elite sport.

Others to have received an OBE include Harjit Bhania, head coach of the Great Britain men's wheelchair basketball team; Janet Paterson, director of Olympic Relations at the British Olympic Association (BOA); Sarah Treseder, CEO of the Royal Yachting Association; and Richard Brickley, who received his honour for services to disability sport.

Sports people to have received an MBE include Ruth Holdaway, CEO of Women in Sport; England netball player Ama Agbeze, who captained England to a historic gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games; and former QPR manager and an anti-racism campaigner Chris Ramsey.

There were also MBEs for Kathryn and Peter Shippey, who launched a campaign for the inclusion of autism-friendly rooms at sports stadiums.

Of the 1,073 people honoured across the UK in this year's list, 47 per cent are women. 10.4 per cent come from a BAME background - the highest ever in the Queen's Birthday Honours.

Of the total of 37 sporting honours, 15 were women (41 per cent).
