Canada’s wellness economy is among the fastest growing in the world, according to new data from the Global Wellness Institute (GWI).

The country’s wellness market grew by 7.3 per cent between 2019 and 2023, placing it in the top ten globally for growth rate. As of 2023, the sector was valued at US$143.8 billion.

The GWI’s latest report breaks down the Canadian wellness economy across 11 sectors, offering a detailed view of the market’s composition and performance.

In 2023, Canada ranked as the eighth-largest wellness economy worldwide, having surpassed its pre-pandemic valuation of US$108.5 billion (2019) by 33 per cent. Like many countries, the market contracted during the pandemic, dipping to US$100.9 billion in 2020, but has steadily rebounded, reaching US$118.8 billion in 2021 and US$134.4 billion in 2022.

Sector spotlight
The Global Wellness Economy: Canada report details the market’s key segments, highlighting their size, growth rate and global ranking (out of 218 countries). Several sectors place in the global top ten:
• Healthy Eating, Nutrition & Weight Loss: US$25.84 billion (#9)
• Personal Care & Beauty: US$25.48 billion (#12)
• Physical Activity: US$24.46 billion (#8)
• Public Health, Prevention & Personalized Medicine: US$19.47 billion (#6)
• Wellness Real Estate: US$13.33 billion (#8)
• Wellness Tourism: US$13.29 billion (#14)
• Traditional & Complementary Medicine: US$11.56 billion (#8)
• Mental Wellness: US$11.47 billion (#3)
• Spas: US$2.41 billion (#14)
• Workplace Wellness: US$1.93 billion (#6)
• Thermal/Mineral Springs: US$0.12 billion (#36)

The 2025 report is available on GWI’s Geography of Wellness platform, supported by an ongoing partnership with Blueprint Global, a luxury real estate and hospitality company.

“We’re pleased to continue working with Blueprint Global to showcase Canada’s wellness landscape,” said Susie Ellis, GWI chair and CEO. “With its focus on wellness-led residential projects, Blueprint Global is a natural partner in making this data accessible.”

Robin Conners, CEO of Westwood 360 International, Blueprint Global’s parent company, added: “The Geography of Wellness programme highlights the growing importance of Canada’s wellness economy and its global competitiveness. Our wellness ecosystem is expanding rapidly and spans everything from tech to traditional approaches.”

Wellness in Canada
Canada’s vast natural beauty, surrounded by the Pacific, Atlantic and Arctic Oceans, offers Canadians diverse wellness opportunities.

From national parks and hot springs to mountains and lakes, entrepreneurs and innovators contribute to a broad wellness ecosystem, presenting unique activities and experiences with a strong commitment to environmental sustainability.

The GWI describes Canada as a country that values wellness principles as core to living a long and healthy lifestyle. This integration includes nature-centric designs that emphasise green spaces, accessibility and community wellbeing, fostering holistic living environments.
