Champneys introduces Jennifer Young's new auricular acupuncture treatment offering 'holistic alternative to Ozempic'

UK-based health spa chain Champneys has rolled out a new 50-minute ear acupuncture ritual claimed to help with weight management
The treatment has been created to support clients by tackling underlying hormonal imbalances that may cause them to gain weight, or to find weight loss or weight gain difficult
The holistic therapy has been developed by skincare specialist and therapist trainer Jennifer Young
The experience focuses on stimulating 12 key acupuncture points that correspond to 14 hormones related to hunger, metabolism and pleasure
A new weight management treatment using auricular (ear) acupuncture has been introduced at Champneys day spa locations throughout the UK.

The holistic therapy, developed by skincare specialist and therapist trainer Jennifer Young, is positioned as a natural alternative to Ozempic, the popular anorexigenic drug for weight loss.

The 50-minute treatment (£96, US$125, €115) aims to support weight management by addressing hormonal imbalances that may contribute to weight gain or hinder weight loss.

The therapy focuses on stimulating 12 key acupuncture points that correspond to 14 hormones involved in hunger, metabolism and pleasure.

Young claims that this natural technique mimics some effects of weight loss drugs, which target the brain's hypothalamic and limbic regions to suppress appetite.

The inspiration
Young, a qualified biologist and specialist in hormonal health, has built her reputation on supporting clients with hormone-related issues, particularly those undergoing cancer treatment or experiencing menopause.

“I created this treatment after years of seeing people struggle with weight, often blaming themselves for what they eat or denying themselves food,” she said, speaking exclusively to Spa Business.

“When people found out I offered acupuncture, they frequently asked if it could help with weight loss. That’s what inspired me to explore the science behind digestion, weight gain and weight loss. My research kept pointing back to hormonal health.”

The treatment journey
Each session begins with a personalised consultation to assess hormone imbalances, which informs the placement of acupuncture needles in specific points on the ears.

Once the needles are in place, the therapist massages the client’s lower legs and feet, focusing on the areas associated with the stomach and spleen meridians in Traditional Chinese Medicine – believed to aid digestion and overall wellbeing.

To extend the benefits beyond the session, ear seeds are applied to maintain pressure on the acupuncture points for three days. These can easily be removed by peeling off the plaster that holds them in place.

Clients also receive personalised aftercare through QR codes, including lifestyle advice and a visual demonstration of related acupressure techniques targeting their specific wellness needs, such as cravings, anxiety or fatigue.

Training and availability
Young, who spent a year developing the protocol, recommends a course of six weekly treatments for the best results, although she says clients can experience benefits after just one session.

She suggests the treatment fits well in spas with a strong membership base or loyal clientele.

“A course of treatments allows me to support clients as they adjust to the changes they feel. However, even as a standalone service, clients are intrigued by its uniqueness, making it a valuable addition to any spa menu.”

Training for the Auricular Acupuncture for Weight Management treatment consists of a three-day in-person programme.
