Dave Courteen and team sell Shrewsbury Club to David Lloyd
By Liz Terry 03 Sep 2024
Dave Courteen and team bought the club out of administration and have built up the business Credit: The Shrewsbury Club/Dave Courteen
Dave Courteen's Mosaic Group has sold The Shrewsbury Club to David Lloyd Clubs
Mosaic bought the club out of administration 13 years ago with 2,000 members. It now has 6,000
The club has extensive tennis facilities, in addition to health and fitness and spa and hosts major tennis championships
David Lloyd plans to invest across the board as well as bringing in its signature programmes
The Mosaic Group, led by Dave Courteen, has sold The Shrewsbury Club to David Lloyd Clubs, taking the David Llloyd portfolio to 132 clubs in the UK and Europe. It plans to invest in the property.

In a sales prospectus, issued last year, David Lloyd said it planned to grow by acquisition and former CEO, Glenn Earlam, transitioned to be chair to lead the company's hunt for suitable businesses to add to its portfolio.

Courteen welcomed the investment that David Lloyd Clubs will bring into the existing club, saying: “We’ll look back with pride that we took the club on when it was in administration, with less than 2,000 members and not the best reputation in the town and we're handing it on as a flourishing business with 6,000 members, significantly-enhanced facilities and – we believe – a reputation as a valuable asset to life in Shrewsbury.

“David Lloyd Clubs is an operator that is well-known to me," said Courteen. "I have huge respect for them and for their team and I’m confident they’ll continue to build on all we’ve created at The Shrewsbury Club and that we’re handing the club on to a business that shares our values and will look after both the members and the team.

“This has been far from an easy decision to make," he said. "On a personal level, The Shrewsbury Club has been a big part of my life, and I’ve loved every moment of my involvement here over the last 13 years. But as a group we believe this decision is in the best interests of the club, and that makes it the right one.

“I'll still be around in the club for the next few months to help with the transition and will also be responsible for delivering the ITF tennis World Tour W100 in October, so I’m not saying goodbye just yet,” he said.

The Shrewsbury Clubs’ existing 65 employees will join David Lloyd's 11,000+ team members.

David Lloyd plans to transform The Shrewsbury Club’s already premium fitness, spa, sport and wellness facilities and take them to the next level, incorporating new workout tech in the gym and professional tennis and swim coaching for children through its Tennis Stars and Swim Stars programmes, as well as adding its signature group exercise series, ranging from Pilates and yoga-infused SPIRIT to high intensity 1GN1TE classes. Additional luxury spa facilities are also planned.

Stuart Caswell, property director at David Lloyd said; “We're delighted to welcome The Shrewsbury Club and all its members. It's already a thriving community with a fantastic range of facilities and we look forward to investing further into the club, helping local residents in Shrewsbury and the surrounding area to enjoy happier, healthier lives.”

"David Lloyd Clubs is passionate about making its clubs a comfortable and welcoming place for members to come together with friends and family to promote physical and mental health and wellness," said Caswell. "Family sits at the heart of David Lloyd Clubs and the proposed investment plans will enhance the facilities within the club for the existing 6,000 members and new individuals and families.

"David Lloyd is committed to creating positive communities both inside and outside its clubs and will explore opportunities to develop local community partnerships."

David Lloyd has 760,000+ members and more than 10,000 team members, including 2,000 health and fitness experts and 680 tennis professionals. The clubs have 1,080 tennis courts and 400 badminton and squash courts.
