Members of the Santa Monica Proper Club can use the property's fitness centre, recovery suite, lounge and terrace
Additional add-ons include options for regular access to the Ayurvedic spa and personalised performance optimisation plans
Hotel benefits are also available to members, such as access to the property's pool, wrok spaces and special rates for food and drink
Membership fees start at US$8,000 (€7,083, £5,938)
Luxury hospitality group Proper Hotels has launched its first health and fitness, wellness and athletic performance membership at the Santa Monica Proper Club in Los Angeles.

Proper Hotels is a hospitality company focused on luxury design and creating cultural connection. These new club memberships are the brand’s next-generation take on a modern country club – for those seeking a third space that meets their lifestyle requirements for health and fitness and wellness. They're available for hotel guests and owners of the hotels' residences.

Facilities

The Proper Club has a 232sq m fitness centre, which is open 24 hours a day. It has strength and functional training equipment, two Pilates reformer beds as well as other equipment by Woodway (five treadmills), Watt Pro (a trainer bike), Peloton (four bikes), Technogym (elliptical and stair climber), Concept II (rowing machine and ski erg), Torque Fitness and Bosu.

The Club has a 214sq m lounge and terrace, designed for relaxation and post-workout recovery. This space has two cold plunges (6 degrees Celsius and 10 degrees Celsius), a dry sauna and private showers with products by Aesop.

The recovery suite at the Club has LA’s first Ammortal Chamber – a treatment space for pulsed electromagnetic field therapy, vibroacoustic sound, red light therapy, molecular hydrogen therapy as well as guided mediation and breathwork. Guests can also use Therabody compression boots.

Members of the Club have access to hotel benefits, such as daily pool access between November and April, two complimentary Sunday night stays a year and access to work spaces around the property. They can also take advantage of special members’ rates on dining options, spa treatments and additional personal training sessions.

Programming for the club and members-only events

Santa Monica Proper Club offers a range of additional activities for its members, including tennis tournaments, nearby sunset paddle-boarding, a running club, member dinners and brunches, sound baths and longevity health testing.

The Club offers more than 13 fitness and wellness classes a week and monthly classes at neighbouring studios, such as Barry’s, BodyRok Pilates, Sweat Yoga and Studio Elevate.

Membership options

Membership of the Proper Club costs US$8,000 (€7,083, £5,938) a year.

There are three other packages that offer different add-ons.

The Proper Club + Surya Spa package gives guests additional access to the property’s 279sq m Surya Spa for an additional US$2,500 (€2,213, £1,856) a year. The spa was created in collaboration with internationally acclaimed Ayurvedic doctor, chef and herbalist, Martha Soffer. Inspired by Indian wellness principles, Surya offers therapeutic massage, steam and oil treatments, cooking, yoga, meditation, personalised Dosha yoga consultations and cleansing Panchakarma programmes.

Proper Club + Performance offers guests personalised functional medicine wellness plans based on health testing, for an additional US$2,500 (€2,213, £1,856) a year. Developed in collaboration with health and longevity specialist, Dr Darshan Sha of health optimisation clinic Next Health, members will undergo biannual baseline and mid-year health testing of more than 50 biomarkers. Additional features of this performance add-on include biannual IV therapy, a VO2 max fitness assessment, three extra 60-minute personal training sessions and two private recovery room sessions per month, as well as the opportunity to bring a guest.

Proper Club + Holistic gives the option to take both the spa and the performance add-ons and costs an extra US$4,500 (€3,984, £3,340) on top of the membership fee, totalling US$12,500 (€11,066, £9,279) per year.

Roll-out of the Proper Club membership

The Proper Hotel in Austin is also open for membership of its wellness Club as the hospitality group expands the Proper Club concept to other properties in its collection.

A spokesperson for Proper Hotels told Spa Business and HCM, "The goal is to establish a collection of wellness-focused social spaces that are thoughtfully embedded in each destination's local culture – while consistently embodying the Proper aesthetic and ethos."

Proper Hotels

In addition to hotels in Austin and Santa Monica, Proper Hotels’ portfolio includes properties in Downtown LA, and San Francisco. It also operates The Shelborne by Proper in Miami and The Collective – a group of design-driven hotels including Hotel June, Avalon Hotels, Ingleside Estate, The Culver Hotel and Montauk Yacht Club.

Proper Hotels are opening next in Dallas, Lake Tahoe and Palm Springs.
