Six Senses’ first spa resort in India to open within 14th-century walled fort, formerly home to royalty
By Megan Whitby 20 Sep 2021
Six Senses is scheduled to open its first Indian destination in Rajasthan in mid-October 2021, complete with a 2,800sq m spa. The wellness sanctuary will be powered by Ayurveda's alternative holistic healing traditions which originated in India more than 3,000 years ago.

Called Six Senses Fort Barwara, the resort will be located in a converted 14th-century walled fort facing the Chauth ka Barwara Mandir temple.

The fort was previously the original home of the Rajasthani Royal family and has been sensitively restored by Six Senses to reinterpret the regal ambience of a bygone era dating back 700 years. The new resort encompasses two palaces and two temples.

Six Senses Fort Barwara's comprehensive spa and fitness offering will be stiuated within the original women's palace and two temples. It will have a major focus on Ayurveda and its whole body healing system, as well as meditation and yoga.

Facilities will include six treatment rooms – three for couples, one single and two Ayurvedic – alongside a meditation temple, yoga pavilion, steamroom, sauna, tepidarium, Swedana, cool pool and still pool.

The spa will also cater to fitness enthusiasts and feature a fitness centre, CrossFit outdoor circuit, Alchemy Bar, changing rooms, relaxation areas, a nail bar and spa boutique.

The wellness facility will be helmed by Dr Jitendra Varshney as wellness director. Varshney is an Ayurvedic doctor, certified yoga and Reiki master who specialises in Ayurvedic and Integrated Wellness consultations, guest treatment plans and Reiki therapies.

He's worked within the Six Senses Spa division around the globe since 2015.

Prior to joining Six Senses, Varshney spent 11 years in India managing spas and wellness centres, including Ananda in the Himalayas, Leo Juventa Medi Spa and Three Graces by Amatraa Spa.

Spa rituals at Six Senses Fort Barwara will include traditional Ayurvedic healing modalities, massages, facials, sound healing, wraps, scrubs and biohacking.

During treatments, Six Senses will use luxury Ayurveda aromatherapy brand Subtle Energies as well as its own in-house range of indigenous essential oils, muds, clays, gels and vegetable oils.

A yoga menu including sunrise/sunset meditation, a selection of personalised wellness programmes and a visiting practitioner series will complete the spa menu's offering.

Accommodation at Six Senses Fort Barwara will consist of 48 suites ranging from 70-280sq m. The East Wing will overlook the countryside while the West Wing will offer views to Barwara village and beyond.

Each accommodation is being designed in contemporary Rajasthani style.
